The truth becomes clear when we look over the last week of our lives: We find it hard to love others, and especially hard to love them sacrificially and unconditionally. Yet God has called us to this kind of love—in Greek, agape love. But He hasn’t left us on our own! For this is the very love with which He has loved us in Christ. This is the love with which He fills His Holy Sacraments. There our lovelessness meets His greater love, so that by faith we learn to treasure His Word and to love even as He loves us.
