Our Choir

I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being.

Psalm 104:33 (ESV)

At Our Savior Lutheran Church we are blessed to have a very talented 15-voice a cappella female choir, as well as, occasionally a mixed SATB choir, which truly makes a joyful sound unto the Lord.

With its diverse programming, the choir sings pieces from various musical periods as an integral part of the worship service. The music and the text are chosen to richly and prophetically bind the congregation’s worship to God, to offer praise to the presence of the Holy Spirit in the word and to glorify the risen Christ in the sacrament.

The core of the choir’s rehearsal and performance activities revolve around the festival days of the church year – beginning at Advent through Epiphany, continuing for the Lenten Season through Eastertide, as well during the festival celebrations of Reformation, All Saints, Christ the King, and Thanksgiving eve.

Our Choir learns and performs a considerable amount of new sacred music each year. The choir has also commissioned a few brand new works by resident composers.

The choir, led by director Katharine Smith, welcomes new members at various intervals.

Gaudete, gaudete! – anonymous 12th century – December 16, 2018
English translation: Rejoice, rejoice! Christ is born of the virgin Mary, rejoice! It is now the time of grace that we have desired; let us sing songs of joy, let us give devotion. God was made man, and nature marvels; the world was renewed by Christ who reigns. The closed gate of Ezekiel has been passed through; from where light rises salvation is found. Therefore, let our congregation now sing in brightness; let it praise the Lord: Greetings to our King.
