A Matter of Authority
It’s a matter of authority: Who has it, where did they get it, and how do they use it? But Jesus turns the tables on the chief priests and elders. The question, put to them, is: Will they recognize and receive the authority of those come from heaven—first John the Baptist, and then the greater One, Jesus the Son of God? The Parable of the Two Sons also asks us: When have we, like the first son, said “I will not” to our God, and have we turned from that disobedience? Or like the second son, have we said that we would but then refuse to walk in the way of repentance and faith? Jesus’ resurrection proves that He has authority—including the authority to forgive us, for He is the Son who said, “I will” and then accomplished all, even our salvation.
